Why the Newspaper Will Never Go Away

There are quite a few people out there who seem to be convinced that the newspaper is going to go the way of…pretty much every other type of media and news publishing service of yore. Once upon a time there were town criers and pamphleteers and now there is the internet. Most newspapers have websites and they post most of their stories online as well as running them in the pages of the newspapers.

This does not mean that the newspaper industry is not facing hard times. Everyone knows that newspaper subscriptions are down and that fewer newspapers are being printed and distributed. Take a look at your local news stand and grocery store: the stacks of the daily newspaper are getting smaller! Even the Sunday newspaper, the paper with the biggest circulation isn't being purchased as frequently.

Why is newspaper circulation and printing down?

Most are quick to attribute the decline of the newspaper to the rise of the internet. Most news outlets publish stories online and now, with services like Google News that present stories from all sorts of newspapers for easy consumption, there is less need to thumb through a paper for the story that you are looking for. You can look up the information you are curious about instead of hoping that the subject is covered in the local paper.

Another reason people think that the newspaper is going away is the harm it poses to the environment. The newspaper requires a lot of paper which means that a lot of trees are being harvested so that people can read the comics each day (because, let's face it, most people don't read the paper from cover to cover). Sure many newspapers are now made out of recycled paper. The truth is that even with the usage of recycled paper, the carbon footprint of newspaper printers is huge! Forget about the physical paper needed. There is also the toxic level of the ink used to print the paper, the pollution put out by the machines that print the paper and the electricity that it takes to run a major newspaper's printing press.

Even with the ease of the internet and the harm to the environment the truth is that settling in with the newspaper each day (or every week) is still something that people love to do. People enjoy the feeling of turning the pages and reading their favorite columnists. Who doesn't love the idea of spending a lazy Sunday lying around with the family and trading sections of the newspaper back and forth?

What's more, the newspaper will contain information on sales, deals and even feature coupons that a person cannot find in the online versions of the newspaper. The newspaper can actually help people save money!

The truth is that newspapers will never go away. Even though people can get most of the news they crave online there are still millions of people who appreciate the feeling of reading the newspaper every day. Screens will not replace paper any time soon that is for sure.

A closer look at the daily news
For news to be of any value, it needs to work inside a framework of defined factors. Satisfying these criteria gives the news piece credibility in the market. The salient features of any news piece must include the following: Timeliness, impact, proximity, prominence, conflict, bizarre, human interest, and currency. With new media breaking barriers in communication, another factor has crept into news there by adding another criterion to the existing ones- Sex.
